ASRM2012: Serdar Bulun honoured as distinguished researcher

Professor Serdar Bulun has been awarded the ASRM 2012 Distinguished Researcher Award, which is given to a scientist with a long record of important scientific achievement in the field of reproductive medicine.

During his career Dr Bulun has focused specifically on the area of oestrogen-responsive abnormalities of the uterus. He has made significant global impact on medicine via pioneering contributions to the epigenetics, pathology, and steroid production and action in understudied diseases such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids.
He is responsible for introducing aromatase inhibitors as an effective class of drugs in the treatment of endometriosis.
To support his research, Professor Bulun has secured more than $20 million in federal funding over his career. Dr Bulun, who is Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles, and trained 38 pre- and post-doctoral students over this career.
When asked about his opinion on what should be prioritised in endometriosis research, Professor Bulun responded:
Whereas animal models are helpful we do need human tissue in endometriosis research, as this is where we obtain the most meaningful data. We therefore need to put a process in place to recruit subjects that will enable us to conduct meaningful clinical trials.
Secondly, I feel that we should get together and reassess the biologic endpoints that we use in our endometriosis-related experiments and other studies. In my opinion investigating inflammation would be a more relevant end-point than anything else we are currently using. Of course, the details as to how we do this and report it will be key.
